Folding-arm awnings

Post-free retractable shade over the patio. Out when the sun is on you, rolled away when it isn't.

Folding-arm awning extended over a patio seating area with no supporting posts

A folding-arm awning is a fabric canopy carried on spring-loaded articulated arms, cantilevered off the wall with nothing standing on the paving. That last part is the whole point: no posts means no furniture arranged around posts, and no post in the middle of the braai traffic.

The other point is that it retracts. A fixed roof over a north-facing Bryanston patio is wonderful in February and a mistake in June, when you actually want the low winter sun reaching into the house. An awning gives you the February shade and hands the June sun back.

Sizing it

  • Projection is how far it comes out from the wall — commonly 2.5m to 4m-class on a domestic patio.
  • Width is made to the opening; wide spans use additional arms rather than a thinner fabric.
  • Pitch matters more than people think: a steeper pitch sheds water and blocks lower sun, a flatter pitch gives more headroom.
  • Mounting height and the roof overhang above decide whether it wall-mounts, soffit-mounts or needs brackets.

Cassette or open

A full cassette closes around the fabric and the arms when retracted, keeping dust, rain and Joburg grit off the fabric. A semi-cassette protects the roll and leaves the arms exposed. An open awning is the most affordable and the least protected. On a house with no roof overhang above the awning, we push the full cassette every time — it is the difference between fabric that looks good in year five and fabric that doesn't.

Wind, honestly

No awning should be left out in a highveld thunderstorm. It is a shade structure, not a roof, and anybody who tells you their awning will ride out a Joburg storm is selling you a repair. What we do instead is specify the wind rating plainly on the quote and recommend motorisation with a wind sensor, which retracts the awning automatically when gusts build — whether you are home, at work, or away for the weekend. Combine it with a sun sensor and the awning manages itself all summer.

Fabric

Solution-dyed acrylics hold their colour under highveld UV far better than piece-dyed cloth, and they are what we quote by default. Lighter colours keep the space under them brighter; darker colours cut more glare. Both are worth seeing against your actual wall before deciding, which is what the sample book at the measure is for.

Over the patio, suburb to suburb

Folding-arm awnings are the standard answer for a Morningside pergola, and the same post-free shade suits patios in Hurlingham, River Club, Lonehill and Sunninghill just as well.
